Wearable AR Glasses Move Closer to Commercialization as CY Autotech Successfully Develops Ultra-Thin Variable-Transmittance Film

CY Autotech has completed a joint R&D project with the Korea Institute of Machinery & Materials (KIMM), Sungkyunkwan University, POSTECH, and RPE to develop an ultra-lightweight, thin-film cell technology capable of variable transmittance control for improving the visibility of AR devices. The project focused on overcoming the weight and flexibility limitations of conventional glass-based light-shielding technologies by developing a film-based local dimming variable-transmittance film. As a result, the team achieved commercial-level optical performance, including independent control of 2,400 cells, low-voltage operation at the 14V level, an 8.92 ms response time, 92.9% aperture ratio, haze of 3% or less, and a bend radius of R=70 mm or less. In particular, by precisely controlling the cell gap, stabilizing the R2P process, and improving dye color deviation, the technology reduced color distortion by 70% and established a domestic foundation for commercialization in various applications, including AR glasses, automotive smart visors, industrial AR helmets, and medical and educational wearable displays.
